What is Diabetes:

It is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood. If the blood sugar level elevated, for long period of time it will cause many other complication like nephropathy (kidney damage), neuropathy (nerve damage), retinopathy (eye damage) and cardiovascular diseases. So the maintainance of blood sugar level is very necessary for diabetic patients. To maintain the blood sugar level follow these, Dietary guidelines for Diabetic patients:


Choose Healthy (complex) carbohydrates that includes:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes such as beans and peas.
  • Low fat dairy products

Take fiber rich foods that includes:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Nuts
  • Whole grains

Choose good fats that includes:

  • Avocado
  • Nuts
  • Canola, olive and peanut oil

Avoid saturated fats that includes:

  • Animal proteins such as butter
  • High fat dairy products
  • Beef, sausage and bacon.

Avoid trans fats that includes:

  • Processed snacks
  • Shortening and stick margarines.
  • Deep fried foods

Avoid foods with added sugar and beverages because they contain simple carbohydrates and sugars and immediately increase the sugar level in blood.

Follow these “Dietary guidelines for Diabetic patients” and avoid diabetic complications.
